Taiwan Odyssey, 4/14/2003, our first day, in Taipei.
After checking into the Grand Hotel and one hour of rest, we embarked on our itinerary that took us to the Revolutionary Martyr's Shrine, Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, Lung Shan Temple, the oldest temple in Taipei. We had lunch in the 86 floor Shin Kong Life Tower with the Chief of Tourism, and dinner at the Grand Hotel, hosted by the Minister of Transportation and Communication. On this and the next pages are some photos of those events.
Jerry Fink, Lloyd Evans, and Joel Aronson, at the first stop of our very tight itinerary - the Martyr's Shrine in Taipei.
The immense Martyr's Shrine is dedicated to China's fallen military heroes. Its ornate design replicates the Ming Dynasty palaces of Beijing.
Every hour, there is a changing of the guard ceremony.
Young soldiers proudly demonstrate their discipline and skills to visitors each day.
These soldiers are trained to stand guard at the shrine, immobile during their vigil.
For Chinese people, red is the color of luck, good fortune, and dignity.
In this atmosphere of architectural order and esthetic, one feels a sense of awe, along with great tranquility. The late president, Chiang Kai-Shek, spent many contemplative hours here.
