Plumb Beach, Brooklyn
by Myron Ernst, 2005

Once there was a time
when swimming was forbidden
because of pin-striped
bodies abandoned there
in the night.

Leewarding on their brims though,
their lonely, proud fedoras
bobbed and rolled
along the thin
beach and were saved
from the gentle wavelets; snared
in the fragile rushes,
the peeping sand grasses.
