Bensonhurst

1.

Max is home and Manya
has been to the butcher
and back on time.  Max
makes molds for rings,
earrings, necklaces,
bracelets; he carves into platinum
settings for gemstones.  On the Steinway
baby grand, there is a photo of Florence,
shortly before her new nose;
she has put a bunch of bananas
on her head, like Carmen Miranda,
and tilts a bottle of milk on her shoulder;
her smile is very flirtatious;
she is doing something with her hips.

2.

Mrs. DeLuca is a squat, dark duck
in mourning.
She sways with a package of eels
wrapped in a package of squid.  Mrs. Herstein
returns with very nice
fillets of herring she found, creamed
and pickled for Max,
and reasonable remnants of cloth—
she may alter a blouse.
